Dabbang2 Review

Image
The theatre was full on saturday night showing the fan following 'Chulbul Pandey' as a property has garnered since 'Dabang'. Salman Khan is on a roll all one can say and this property is here to stay. Coming to the sequel the intro scenes were quite likeable with a 'comic strip' like transformation of each frame....Somewhere it also connects to the fact that characters like 'Chulbul Pandey' are more like comic characters....The entry of 'Chulbul Pandey' as usual has been outstanding garnering whistles from the audience.... The rest of the movie is a tight short story around the heroics of 'Chulbul Pandey'..... Salman Khan keeps the 'innocent yet clever and strong' essence of the character intact and played it very well with ease once again and possibly that's what the audience have started loving in Dabbang.....The movie is tight , doesn't make you think too much but just enjoy the heroics of 'Salman'.... ...

Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey

Image
Movies like Hobbit belong to just two people according to me a. The creator like Peter Jackson who is a master of creating movies with just amazing visual effects and detailing and b. the writer who initially penned and visualised such fantasy.....Such movies are all about great imagination and detailing...... Hobbit is a prequel to 'Lord Of The Rings' as it takes the journey of 'Bilbo Baggins' an hobbit (a species who are not only dwarf but also very very light on their feet) and sets out on a journey with a set of 13 'dwarves' who themselves are on a journey to reclaim their old home in the 'Lonely Mountains' from a deadly dragon who threw them out from their home years back.... This time they are led by the kings son 'Thorin' & Magician 'Gandalf' and also supported by the 'elf's'.....But on the way to Lonely mountain they will have to first face the 'Orcs', 'Goblins'  'deadly wargs' and ...

Whenever Amir Khan makes a movie the general perception is it will be worth watching and that's what drew audience to 'Talaash' as well....and this time too Amir didn't disappoint his audiences....'Talaash' is worth the watch... Although the story idea seems to be a bit inspired but the screenplay is completely original... Talaash is the story of this cop (Amir) who is investigating a case of accident of an well known actor but at the same time he seems to be lost in his own world where he is constantly feeling guilty of losing his own son in another accident...This has effected his relationship with his wife (rani) on one hand and on the other hand to run away from his past he finds solace in this prostitute (kareena). Incidentally the prostitute also plays an important role in this case as the case progresses... The movie starts with shots of night life in Mumbai which has been captured beautifully....The performances by all characters are superb....Ran...

Life Of Pi

Image
Yann Martel's book a few years ago got extremely good reviews because of this unique story of a boy and tigers journey through the sea and how they not only learn to communicate with each other, during the journey strike a relationship with each other and fight the various difficulties to stay alive. The story was not just thrilling but also highly emotional. When 'Ang Lee' decided to recreate this beautiful story into a film the whole world waited with lot of curiosity as 'Ang Lee' is a master in graphics and in his last movie he did tell his story well too.... Quite predictably the theater was packed as the film has been one of those movies which did not need to do much marketing to draw audiences into theater... The first few scenes as the film starts and representation of the 'Pondicherry Zoo' where our main character 'Pi' i.e. Piscine Patel lived had been breathtaking specially the intro scenes....I would say the screen was just magical...

Skyfall Review

Image
Skyfall has been an awaited movie by all James Bond fans....And here it is with all fanfare and getting all required attention....Possibly just like people await for 'Apple Products' quite similarly they await for the next bond movie....You don't need to market it , people find it when its releasing and when you go to the multiplex you will find people flocking to the theaters...But like all products even a movies business depends a lot on its 'WOM'.... So here we were in an already crowded theater waiting for our turn to be entertained by Bond.....As the theater goes dark and bond makes an entry the first 10 minutes were just superb with a chase sequence on motorcycle which was outstanding....We were convinced that the movie is going to be awesome....Finally the chase comes to an end and the movie starts....Rest 2 hours were complete opposite as opposed to the starting 10 minutes.....What was most surprising is the script which was highly predictable and had n...

Review 'English Vinglish'

Image
Saturday night BIG CINEMAS was full here in one small suburban town of Navi Mumbai. Just shows that there are some people who has the ability to rule people's heart forever. SRIDEVI seems one such person. After watching 'English Vinglish' one saying comes true once again that 'Class in always permanent' and that's what Sridevi demonstrated in the movie with her pretty uncanny nature of acting which is never overboard or flashy. 'English Vinglish' is a simple story of a simple housewife who is in search of 'Respect' that she never gets at her home because of her inability to speak well in English and her journey of how she actually discovers her confidence once she goes to attend her sisters daughter's marriage in New York. One one hand there is not much to describe about the movie but on the other hand its been a wonderful 2.5hrs experience in the theater when you are watching the movie. Its possibly because its a simple slice of lif...

Barfi Review

Image
The crowds were full on the night show of 'Barfi' on friday. It shows that like me many more were waiting to watch 'Barfi' because of various reasons . The movie generated enough interest specially people were curious to watch their favorite actor 'Ranbir' & 'Priyanka' how they play out the role of deaf and dumb. And one must say that when you come out of the screens you cannot forget how much both these actors have satisfied you with their superb performance in the movie. Ranbir in his role of of a deaf and dumb but yet a guy full of energy who never gives up in life and Priyanka who is also dumb and more complicated than Ranbir. Barfi truly belongs to both these actors who have demonstrated their histrionic skills are par excellence. For Ranbir this is the 2nd time possibly after 'Rocket Sing The Salesman' where he played the role of a common man and completely got into the character where you couldn't differentiate between ranbir and t...

Review GOW - 2

Image
Making a part 2 is always prone to comparisons whether its life (look at all star children) or movies....In case of GOW-2 its even more because its not really a part 2 but the real post interval part..... Spontaneous thoughts : Part 1 was more captivating in its acting, characterisation, build up of the characters, background score and most importantly the depth of characters which i found missing in part 2....While 'Nawazuddin Sidiqqui' did extremely well in bringing his own style to the role but if i compare among the three generations in the movie i.e. Jaideep Ehlawat, Manoj Bajpai & Nawazuddin Sidiqqui all of whom presented their roles of a gangster in their own way i actually found 'Jaidip Ahlwat' and 'Manoj Bajpai' to be more captivating than 'Nawazuddin' and that possibly made the part 1 more interesting .....The background score and music in Part 1 also sounded better than the later half....Possibly the take is that the glamour in 'semi ...

Review 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Image
Even after 4 years when Batman, DA Dent & Commisioner Gordon fought the intelligent and dangerous 'Joker', the theater at 9:45am in the saturday morning was 100% full....That's the power of 'Batman' and power of 'Christopher Nolan' who with his crafty storytelling format which are complex, dark and post seeing them you would like to see it once again to get the finer details manages to engage the audience.... This time while Mr. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has put himself into a self exile after he took it upon himself to take the blame of DA Dent's for the greater good in his fight against Joker.....But things take a turn from the time the mysterious 'cat burglar' (Anne Hathway) not only steals his mothers necklace but also his fingerprints for mysterious reasons.....While all this is happening a mysterious terrorist 'Bane' is planning his own plot to take over the city of 'Gotham' and his ways and means are too powerful for...

Review Of 'Bol Bacchan'

Image
' Bol Bacchan ' yet another movie from the Rohit Shetty genre who since ' Golmaal ' has been trying his hand in the genre which currently the Indian Audiences seems to be loving called as 'meaningless nonsense'.....Most interesting part of these movies are that the lead players are all in their 40's or approaching 50's and will be pairing against ladies who can in another movie pass off as their daughter or at best their very young sisters.... Unlike the ' Golmaal Series from Shetty ' which had some really funny moments , Bol Bacchan has used an old classic plot and fit it into a new situation....unlike the original's natural comedy this one has forced comedy which comes thru some really meaningless dialogues from Ajay Devgan and a gay act from Abhisekh Bacchan ......Although personally i found the movie to absolutely dumb, with comedy that is forced and not funny at all.....But for the audiences in general it seemed to strike a cho...

'Gangs Of Wasseypur' is India's answer to 'Quintin Tarantino's' genre of filmmaking but apart from the genre its completely original in its script and narrative. An out and out goon movie which is real, glamorous and extremely captivating...... Its one of those movie which you can watch a couple of times not only to let it grow on you but also to get the scheme of things happening in the narrative. The script is absolutely original a revenge story against the backdrop of 'Coal Mafia' set in a place called 'Wasseypur' a small town near Dhanbad....The story is well researched and which starts from the 1940's and continues till today...The intricacies of how and why the political-goons nexus have flourished the in the sector since independence has been extremely well researched and mixed extremely well in the overall story which is in its Core is a revenge story among two sects of people living in 'Wasseypur'....The narration of the...
Image
Ferrari ki sawaari is a 'Feel Good' genre movie. Its an well made movie with decent performances from everybody but still the movie fails to make any impact and you come out feeling of watching a very average movie from a great team. Commercially inspite of being made on a shoe string budget the movie still might find it difficult to make money as it may not gather enough audiences and good word of mouth, important elements for commercial success since the movie doesn't have the starcast or music to garner good value out of music rights or satellite rights... The problem with the movie seemed to be lack of solid emotional moments in the screenplay that is extremely necessary in this genre of movies, something the movie lacked because of a very average script....Inspite of having extremely capable actors like 'Sharman Joshi' & 'Boman Iraani' the lack of emotional connect is due to the scripts weakness.... The story revolves around a 'son, dad a...
Image
After watching Shanghai two thoughts came to my mind that 'Dibakar Banerjee' is a genius filmmaker in India and how the country has changed hands from being a colony of Britishers to being a colony of politicians... I am yet to see a better movie which portrays a political conspiracy so beautifully....It doesn't have any drama (barring one song), its consistently focuses on what happens to common man in a political conspiracy and how politicians play their games behind the scenes....In a nutshell although the movie is a thriller based on a plot about political conspiracy what makes it watchable is the treatment where you won't see any cliche treatment that you would normally expect around this kind of plot...Its a movie that is mature, extremely realistic and takes you by surprise with its treatment...... In terms of performances on one hand 'Abhay Deol' keeps his goodwill as a tremendous actor who can portray any role very realistically, Emraan Hashmi t...
Image
'Rowdy Rathore' is yet another movie from the Prabhudeva's stable whose style of films could be termed a genre called 'Meaningless Action Thriller'.....A remake of a south Indian movie starred by Ravi Teja, rowdy is an out and out entertainer....There is not much to analyse in the movie as it does not need that...If you are the kind who wants to apply ones mind while watching a movie then 'rowdy rathore' is not for you but if you enjoy pure Indian commercial flicks then you will enjoy this movie to the core....Whats interesting to see that slowly but surely 'South Indian' formula is working in Bollywood as South Indian industry has used this formula to death and in the process created superstars like 'Ravi Teja', 'Vijay' and above all 'Rajnikanth'..... Coming to the movie, action scenes are superb (although pretty similar to the one you have seen in Dabang/Wanted etc...), music is foot-tapping specially the piece which k...
Image
'Ishaqzaade' ....after watching the movie the first thought that came to my mind was like a cricket team where everybody is a novice and the game is going nowhere.....Being a positive thinker i feel possibly 'YRF' took a bold step to give youngsters a chance to write, make and act in a movie but while in many cases such risk gives great results here unfortunately it not only falls flat on ur face but errs on the edge of actually annoying you. The script is bad, direction aweful and acting very very ordinary its kind of a foolish movie made for the launch of a starkid.....The writer seems to have a very weird idea of 'Hindi Belt' life where people possibly have nothing to do but engage in sleaze, sex, abuse and fight over nothing and right from the time they wake up in the morning till they sleep they behave and act in this way without giving themselves any relief...I am sure even monkeys would get tired of jumping and hanging all day long but in our writers ...
Image
'Bhooter Bhobishyot' is a bengali satirical movie based on how today's new age development is putting some of the best known pasts into the oblivion and making it difficult for the past to exist anymore....The director 'Anik Dutta' has tried to tell this message thru a very unique story of a group of ghosts living in a old antique North Kolkata house which is now under sale and how the ghosts who are already under stress in the age of consumerism due to destruction of old properties (where they used to live) plots to save this single property ...The movie starts with a movie being shot in this old bunglow and the heroine faints seeing a 'Ghost' while shooting her scenes, now this becomes a huge news item, leading to reduction of shoots in the bungalow and during these times another director 'Ayan' acted by 'parambrata' (Kahaani Fame) pays a visit to the bungalow to shoot an ad film and then what happens is the movie all about.....I think ...

Vicky Donor is a well paced cool movie. The story idea is very unique and unique content always makes any creative piece clutter breaking to make you take notice of the same. The whole idea of a sperm donor and story in the backdrop of this is interesting, unqiue and original. The production house has been very prudent in keeping the production budgets tight ensuring that the movie will definitely make money. Its not a great movie but definitely a very interesting short story which you would love to watch once and spread a positive word of mouth. The positives of the film are its cast starting with 'Ayushman' who has been quite confident, effortless in the movie although the script doesn't test his histrionic skills much so it will be difficult to tell whether with this movie he has arrived as an actor but yes his confidence shown in the movie will definitely land him more roles....Apart from 'Ayushman' the people who really lift the movie and have been a deli...

Review of Marathi Movie 'Deool'

Image
Its really wonderful to see how beautifully the makers of 'Deool' has captured the commercialisation of 'God' in the film without calling for any controversy... Directed by 'Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni' and acted by some wonderful actors like Nana Patekar, Girish Kulkarni & Sonali Kulkarni the movie deals with the story of a village which has been leading the same life for decades but how an interesting news about existence of 'Dutta' ( a maharashtrian god) sparks interest in various people and how they go about commercialising the idea is the movie all about. The actors have been fabulous in 'potraying' the behavior of rural people and cinematographer has done a fab job of bringing the maharashtra's rural setting into reality.....Nana Patekar has been outstanding in the role of a local politicians who wants development in his village but at the same is corrupt and bound by political compulsions and his attraction & possesiveness for...

'Kahaani' - A Breezy Affair

Image
This morning you have woken up and thinking which movie to put your money on then don't think as 'Kahaani' is here to entertain you. 'Breezy' is the word that comes to my mind when trying to explain the experience i had while watching this movie. Yes 'Kahaani' is a breezy little story that makes you sit on your toes and just live the moment with the story. You ignore some of the 'flaws' or 'creative liberties' that the director or writer have taken because at the end of the day you say what a good tight suspense thriller. The movie while many might say and rightfully so belongs to the acting powerhouse 'Vidya (or should i call Bidya) Balan but it also belongs equally if not less for the writer / director of 'Kahaani' 'Sujoy Ghosh & Adwait' who have done a marvellous job of writing a very original and interesting story. I have not seen a better suspense movie in many years in Bollywood than 'Kahaani' and i...

Review of 'Icche' (bengali movie)

Image
Icche is possibly one of the most wonderful movies i have ever seen till date...More so for the wonderful wonderful performance by 'Sohini Sengupta'... The whole story revolves around the mother 'Mamta' and son 'Soumik' played by 'Sohini Sengputa' & 'Samadarshi Dutta'. The mother is a typical bengali mother who is over possessive and protectionist about her son and wants to fullfill all her dreams thru her son....She wants to fullfill all her dreams thru her son and in the process forgets that her son has a life and identity of his own...'Soumik' starts realising this uncomfortable reality when he falls in love witha Girl in Class XIIth and her mother comes to know of it.... The story on hand is simple but on the other hand it deals with various shades of character of 'Mamta' who loves her son like anything, sometimes she is her best buddy, sometimes she is biggest opponent and sometimes she is manipulating... The story ...

Review of '22'e shraban' (bengali movie)

Image
22'e shrabon is a pyschological thriller directed by 'Shirjit Mukherjee'. The cast involves Prosonjeet, Parambrata Chatterjee, Raima Sen and Abir Chatterjee and Goutam Ghosh who came back to the screen after 29 years with a powerpacked performance. The story starts with a police officer 'Abhijit'(Parambrata) investigating a serial killing case in Kolkata that has been hogging the limelight and have spread panic among the people but police is unable to find a connection that can help them find some lead or help crack the case anyway. In such a scenario abhijit's boss advised him to take help from an old friend of his who has been suspended from Police for his 'Agressive behavior' but is a brilliant officer and has prior experience in solving a couple of serial killing case. Parallelly the story also deals with 'Abhijeet's' love life with his live in journalist girlfriend 'Amrita'. Abhijeet's problem in this case is that he is ...

Review 'ek mai aur ek tu'

Image
Ek Mai Aur Ek Tu is the third movie from Imraan Khan having a similar storyline of a boy meets a girl, someone who is confused about what is he suppossed to in life and ultimately the boy and girl figure out their relationship and the questions about his clarity in life still unclear.... On one hand the risk is Imraan Khan seems to be getting typecasted on the other hand it seems he seems to be improving in his histrionic skills in such unidimensional roles.... The movie is a slice of life story of this rich guy living in LA who is fed up being bullied by his parents all his life and this girl also living in LA who is completely independent and happy go lucky...The story is pretty unidimensional yet interesting....The good thing about the movie is that its 'Perfectly Average' ( a dialogues used by Kareena in the movie) and therefore you dnt come out saying what a bore and cliche or faltu....Its 'perfectly average'....The movie doesn't end with a cliche climax and...

Review 'Descendents'

Image
'Descendents' is once again another beautiful movie possibly in the same genre of a 'one guy story' from Geroge Clooney after his 'Up In The Air' in 2010. The movie deals with a very simple story of a rich guy Matt (Clooney) in 'Hawaii' who suddenly finds himself in a lot of unexpected situations...His wife in coma, two daughters with a wide age difference, a secret about his wife he has come to know and a land deal where he is the main decision maker....How this person deals with all these is what the movie is all about... The beauty of the movie is its simplicity and how it potrays the precarious situation of the main protagonist but in a humorous way... George Clooney has yet again been fantastic as he was in 'up in the air'...His potrayal of a father who is confused, an husband who is in agony and pain is just splendidly natural.... Apart from Clooney the two other characters which stand out in the movie are that of this beautiful teen...

Agneepath - Wast Of Time, Money & Energy

Image
Movie remakes are a fresh take and as long as they are treated really well comparisons don't matter....'Don' was a perfect example where 'Farhan' did a fabulous job with the movie so much so that he has been able to convert it into a property and pretty successfully so...I dnt think we really can compare 'new Don' with 'old Don' at all.... The problem starts when the fresh take doesn't turn out so well and therefore as a reflex you start comparing it with its original.... Karan Johar said in recent interviews that he made it because his father was sad that the movie did not do that well on the box office....I do not know whether he actually meant that or it was just another publicity stunt to gain sympathy towards the new release and therefore creating a reason to watch the movie...Whatever it may be i feel at least Yash Johar managed to make a movie which although may not have been a Box Office success but the movie has managed to establish...

Movies to look forward to in 2012

Image
Between Hollywood and Bollywood 2012 is surely skewed towards Hollywood with some blockbuster releases worldwide. Here is a list of some of them J Edgar - Directed by Clint Eastwood and acted by Leonardo DiCaprio Josh Lucas,Naomi Watts J. Edgar explores the life of one of the most powerful and controversial figures of the 20th century.DiCaprio delivers a superb performance as the ex-head of FBI for 48 years. The film examines Edgars personal life as an alleged closeted homosexual. Given Clint Eastwood and Leonardo we can surely look forward to this as being an intense movie. The 'Descendents' directed by 'Alexander Payne' acted by George Clooney,Shailene Woodley,Judy Greer,Beau Bridges After the fabulous 'Ides of March',George Clooney has another winner on his hands.Directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways),The Descendants has been nominated for the Golden Globes and will find itself in the Oscar list soon enough.Clooney plays an indifferent husband and ...
