Life Of Pi
Yann Martel's book a few years ago got extremely good reviews because of this unique story of a boy and tigers journey through the sea and how they not only learn to communicate with each other, during the journey strike a relationship with each other and fight the various difficulties to stay alive. The story was not just thrilling but also highly emotional.
When 'Ang Lee' decided to recreate this beautiful story into a film the whole world waited with lot of curiosity as 'Ang Lee' is a master in graphics and in his last movie he did tell his story well too....
Quite predictably the theater was packed as the film has been one of those movies which did not need to do much marketing to draw audiences into theater...
The first few scenes as the film starts and representation of the 'Pondicherry Zoo' where our main character 'Pi' i.e. Piscine Patel lived had been breathtaking specially the intro scenes....I would say the screen was just magical in terms of the quality of photography and graphics displayed as it covered the zoo......The initial section when the story started unfolding as the older character of 'Pi Patel' i.e. Irfaan Khan narrated the story to a story writer engaged us quite well.....But everybody was eagerly waiting for the most awaited section of the story when Pi and other major character i.e. Richard Parker (The Tiger) will be left to confront each other in the middle of nowhere in the deep sea.....
The story made that transition very very nicely as the whole sequence of the ship's wreckage (in which Pi's family travelled with his family to Canada) was extremely well shot....
But the problem started when the story moved from initial sequences to the sequence where only two characters Mr. Pi and Richard Parker in the middle of no where and their journey....One has to say during the whole movie it made you feel amazed how well Ang Lee's graphics work has been....The Tiger Richard Parker's emotions well extremely well captured.....But where the story fails to make an impact on the 'emotions' and 'thrill' department....It finally looks like a movie which is very very high on technology and makes the unbelievable interaction of a Tiger and a Boy in the middle of the sea look really really believable but it somehow does not take the audience's emotions thru highs and lows which a story like this should have done and therefore at the end you feel like walking out after watching a very very high quality 'Documentary'...
This has been a problem with extremely well written books being translated into movies....
Overall 'Life of Pi' as a movie makes an impact in bits and pieces but not in totality.....It will be interesting to see how the movie fairs worldwide.....But Ang Lee needs to be congratulated for translating this book on screen which in itself needs lot of courage and imagination.....
Recommended for one watch for those who haven't read the book because the story is definitely incredible....
