Review of '22'e shraban' (bengali movie)
22'e shrabon is a pyschological thriller directed by 'Shirjit Mukherjee'. The cast involves Prosonjeet, Parambrata Chatterjee, Raima Sen and Abir Chatterjee and Goutam Ghosh who came back to the screen after 29 years with a powerpacked performance.
The story starts with a police officer 'Abhijit'(Parambrata) investigating a serial killing case in Kolkata that has been hogging the limelight and have spread panic among the people but police is unable to find a connection that can help them find some lead or help crack the case anyway. In such a scenario abhijit's boss advised him to take help from an old friend of his who has been suspended from Police for his 'Agressive behavior' but is a brilliant officer and has prior experience in solving a couple of serial killing case.
Parallelly the story also deals with 'Abhijeet's' love life with his live in journalist girlfriend 'Amrita'. Abhijeet's problem in this case is that he is unable to find stability in his love life as they keep fighting with each other and keep breaking up only to patch up again....On the other hand 'Amrita's close friend and colleague 'Surjo' also loves her but is aware of her closeness to 'Abhijeet'....'Abhijeet' is unable to accept 'Surjo' in their life while 'Amrita' is very close to him...
So while in a nutshell its 'Abhijeet's life which is at the centre of attraction...The story takes a new turn as this suspended cop 'Probir' who is extremely bad mouthed but very intelligent accepts to work with 'Abhijeet'....
The fourth angle in the movie is this 'psycopath' poet 'Nibaran' played by Goutam Ghosh who belives he is working on his book which none other than 'Rabindranath' is going to publish and behaves very strangely as he keeps leaving his house in the night in the midst of this serial killing. 'Amrita' whose channel is doing a story on 'Serial Killers' to leverage the current situation comes to know that 'Nibaran' was in jail for 18 years and he was the only person in the jail who had interaction with a serial killer in Alipore Jail who has now been shifted to 'Tihar'...So she and surjo decide to interview Nirbaran and get some insight into the mind of a serial killer.
How Probir and Abhijeet solves the murder mystery, how abhijeet deals with is personal life issues and what happens to Nirbaran is the movie all about.
In a way the movie is inspired from various multicharacter story within a story format used in Hollywood quite a lot but what makes the movie a treat to watch is the 'Original Plot'...Very powerful performance by all especially Goutam Ghose and Proosnjeet and i would also say also 'Parambrat'....The movie has extremely good background score and music...It manages to keep you glued as the intersection of characters is very interesting and you like to see what happens in the end...The direction is very stylish and edited very well.....
What could have been better is the murder mystery itself which i felt becomes predictable although you still like the way the cops actually figure it out...Secondly the characterisation of Prosonjeet which was extremely powerful as he is introduced becomes weaker as he picks up the offer to work along with Parambrat which was a little mismatch of treatment....Raima as usual was cute and sweet and did her job effortlessly....Goutal Ghosh played his role as an intriguing character to the 'T'...
Movies like these augur really well for the industry in Bengal as they are not completely above ur head but yet does not stick to the regular perception about a typical commercial bengali movie....I feel prosonjeet after playing mindless roles his entire career is now really experimenting and realising his real potential as an actor...Parambrata is an actor to watch out for who with a very common look can surprise you....
Very interestingly Kolkata is slowly but surely has started generating interest among Bollywood producers who are experimenting with casting people like Parambrata in crticial roles (watch out 'Kahaani')
If you would like to catch up on a Bengali Movie or travelling to Kolkata and want to pick up one movie on ur way back this is definitely one you should consider.
