After watching Shanghai two thoughts came to my mind that 'Dibakar Banerjee' is a genius filmmaker in India and how the country has changed hands from being a colony of Britishers to being a colony of politicians...
I am yet to see a better movie which portrays a political conspiracy so beautifully....It doesn't have any drama (barring one song), its consistently focuses on what happens to common man in a political conspiracy and how politicians play their games behind the scenes....In a nutshell although the movie is a thriller based on a plot about political conspiracy what makes it watchable is the treatment where you won't see any cliche treatment that you would normally expect around this kind of plot...Its a movie that is mature, extremely realistic and takes you by surprise with its treatment......
In terms of performances on one hand 'Abhay Deol' keeps his goodwill as a tremendous actor who can portray any role very realistically, Emraan Hashmi takes you by surprise as his role is well underplayed and as consistent as all other actors in the movie (as most of the other crew members are offbeat actors) that the thought never crosses your mind that you are watching serial kisser emraan...he has shown that he has got much more mettle than what people associate with him...Kalki kolchain has done well but she has stuck to her image of a 'troubled child' as the movie reaches the climax 'Abhay Deol' however clearly sticks out in your mind...All other actors have played their roles beautifully....
The real hero of the movie is 'Dibakar Banerjee' whose treatment has been one of its kind and possibly has been of the highest standard...the way he has portrayed the darkness and behind the scenes plots by politicians is highly commendable...
The plot seems to be inspired by 'Nandigram' incidence as it deals with the investigation of a killing of a social activist fighting against proposed SEZ in a fictitious small town Bharat Nagar......
The treatment is hollywoodish somewhat the way you would have seen in movies like Syriana or Michael Clayton.....
In terms of its content and quality its a 'must watch' as its indeed Dibakar's best creation...
Commercially how far such treatment will appeal to the audience is a question mark as i could hear murmurs among college kids that the movie lacks dialogues, somebody saying its too slow...Unfortunately with such sensibilities its clearly not a product that will appeal to the masses but definitely will be well appreciated among the smaller 'audience community' in urban centres who appreciate different treatment but good content....
But for all my friends my recommendation go and watch this brilliant creation by Dibakar Banerjee....Bharat Mata Ki Jay But Also Dibakar Ki Joy....The movie is consistently smooth and superb....
