DON 2

Image
Farhan Akhtar did a marvellous job with 'Don' which was sleek, an entertaining script with a twist and an underplayed new DON in SRK and was in true sense a fresh modern version of Don which apart from the name and was a completely fresh movie which when you saw never felt like comparing with the old one....It was in a nutshell a marvelous movie. That is why as a fan i was quite eagerly looking forward to Don2....The tailors were looking very sleek, music gave it the connection with its previous version and SRK looks were looking good. As i went into the movie the first half started with an action sequence introducing Don i.e. SRK in thailand and setting the pretext of Don trying to make an entry into the Drug Cartel in Europe and Drug Cartel in Eurpope wanting to finish him off....I must say a very good setting which had lot of potential to be exploited in the script.....Then it moves onto Interpol HQ in Malyasia where it introduces the old characters 'Roma' i.e. ...

Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Image
Mission Impossible always comes with a single minded agenda i.e. to entertain. It ensures that your brain is constantly busy seeing action rather than trying to analyse the story and the end benefit you are left with 2 hrs of full fledged entertainment. One can very draw parallel with the recent 'Salman Khan' movies that have hit the box office on roll... The only difference is that Salman Khan stories are too simplistic in its approach while MI is a little more scientific and techno savvy... The movie is beautifully shot in Russia, Prague,Dubai, Canada , Mumbai & Bangalore. The story revolves around the mission taken by Ethan Hunt & team (Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg & Paula Patton). They are chasing a mad ex nuclear scientist who has stolen a nuclear launch device from Kremlin and is on his way to Mumbai via Dubai to launch a nuclear war across the world. The problem is Kremlin blames US and Ethan's organisation IMF for the act and the US presi...

Ladies Vs Ricky Behl

Image
Ladies vs Ricky Behl is kind of a sequel to 'Band Baja Baraat' with the same lead cast and a script that has similarity in terms of its treatment & setting. So one expected a similar level of entertainment. The movie definitely starts interestingly as it takes us thru the relationship of a young couple played by debutant 'Parineeti Chopra' and Ranveer Singh set in Delhi. The first 20 minutes were very entertaining to watch as the dialogues, spontaneity of both actors and the con act by ranveer singh was quite a treat to watch. Specially the boldness of the girl(parineeta) was quite insightful and interesting to see when the girl was not all apologetic of the fact that her dad was conned by her boyfriend instead was upset that he dumped her. The way she ways 'Usne to acchi planning ki thi , papa ko bhi to smartness dikhani chahiye thi naa' were quite funny and interesting and shows a new age philosophy of the youth today.... But from thereon the movie be...

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster

Image
Sahib Biwi aur Gangster is yet another thriller with elements of UP Politics in it. The movie is based on a simple story of love hate power money lust between 3 characters which are the also the three words in the title of the movie....Jimmy Shergil, Mahi Gill & Randeep Hooda.... Jimmy Shergil (sahib) is the descendant of a royal family who doesn't have much money left but is still left with the royal habits of keeping a mistress and having the royal pride intact...he has political ambitions.....Mahi Gill (biwi) is the legal wife of 'Sahib' whose only search is little attention from her husband and in absence of that she is mentally unstable....Randeep Hooda (gangster) is an imposter who is running away from a crime he committed in the rush of blood and lands in sahib's family as an employee... The twists and turns start as 'Mahi Gill & Randeep Hooda' developes attraction towards each other and start enjoying that till both realise that it's bo...

The Dirty Picture - An Entertainer

Image
A typical South Indian track introduces us to the world of South Indian cinema and the world of 'Silk'....The initial background score, the pace at which the movie starts gives us a perception that the movie is going to be raunchy, hard hitting and will demonstrate the dark side of 'South Indian Movie Industry' specially during 70's and 80's very boldly.....Into the first half as the movie concentrates on the rise of 'Silk' it does lot of justice to the promise it made and yes it seemed like 'Vidya' was enjoying herself doing the role of silk...bringing out all the emotions of a girl who is madly searching for a lead in the film industry in the most natural manner one could.... While the first half was a great entertainer i felt it could have been much more bolder than what it was and it was clear that 'Ekta & Milan' always walked a thin line possibly keeping the sensibilities of Indian Audience & Censor Board.... As 'Silk...

Chaplin (Bengali Movie) - Review

Image
Directed by a new director and acted by pretty young actors 'Chaplin' is a treat to watch specially the performance of the lead actor 'Rudranil Ghosh' The movie is a simple story of 'Banshi' who is extremely poor and his son....'Banshi' doesn't have any other skill but one which is his ability to play 'Charlie Chaplin'....His life is dedicated to his son and never lets his poverty come in between him and his son's happiness....They relish each and every moment in life and enjoy life....His son loves his fathers act of Charlie Chaplin and has just one wish that one day his father will celebrate his birthday with full fanfare and 'Banshi' has just one wish that is to give his son a solo act of Charlie Chaplin on his birthday in a theatre in Kolkata...But unfortunately he is unable to fullfill his wish bcoz of his acute poverty.... But one day things change 'Banshi' gets to play the role of Charlie Chaplin in a reality sh...

5 movies on my way to new orleans

On my way to New Orleans it was an interesting start. The continental airlines flight was cancelled and i was shifted to otherwise empty Air India fleet. To my surprise the Air India fleet was quite well renovated and to my bigger surprise it had a in flight entertainment system on all seats....The real surprise came when i went thru the menu....I must say it was truly Indian with a good range of Hindi and Regional movies on the plate and with that also a wide range of hollywood movies....Net net positively surprised by the quality....Then started the selection.....Started with a bengali movie 'abohoman'.....It was just 5 minutes into the movie that i got really bored with the typical intellectual approach of bengali movie makers where every dialogues comes after a long deep breath and between two dialogues there is a difference of at least 5 minutes....So i switched Gears and chose a telugu movie and thats where my day started:- Movie No. 1:- Telugu, Villagelo Vinayakudu:- This...

Rockstar - A lost Opportunity

Image
A mad kind of guy with loads of attitude wearing a costume that kind of helping that attitude flow thru gets into a small fight with locals in some country abroad, gets into a bus and people around him seems to looking at him with surprise on their face as they compare his looks with the looks of the singer called 'JORDAN' on the large hoardings around the town, but Jordan is lost in his own thoughts , unfazed by people's curiosity, bangs the barricade in the stadium where his show is scheduled, gets on to the stage and prepares to face the audience who are going mad for him.....That's JORDAN aka Ranbir Kapoor for you in 'Rockstar'....I must say i was completely taken aback by this powerful entry which had no dialogues, just expression..... The movie rockstar belongs to just one star i.e. Ranbir Kapoor every time he comes on screen it just lights up, the efforts he has put to get into the skin of a musician who is always lost in his own thoughts, seemingly doesn...

Review of 'Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara'

What a visual treat is definitely something you will think after u have seen ZNMD. The movie is definitely a great marketing effort for Spain as a tourism destination and hopefully Spain will get some trialists because of this movie. However for the movie per say one definitely cnt say that 'its a sheer treat to watch'. For the second time post 'Game' Excel Entertainment seems to be losing its grip on content...something which always had been their main forte...For Zoya Akhtar after a good start (with Luck By Chance which was commercially unsuccessful but the movie was not bad)its a very poor succession...one was expecting that she will present something better than her first movie, ZNMD unfortunately is too niche in its subject, its treatment of characters and overall sensibilities....something that will appeal only to the top 1% of movie going audience....to be fair few scenes in the movie are quite emotional or are genuinely funny but problem is they are too few........

Review Chillar Party

Chillar party , took my child with the expectation that she will enjoy the movie and boy first time (unlike my law of averages, where my expectations always go the other way)..this movie was not only entertaining (my benchmark for entertainment is anything that can make a 3yr old laugh, enjoy and concentrate)but also touched an emotional chord too....70% of the movie was pure entertainment with a sweet short story of the friendship of a group of cute little naughty kids all staying in a housing society and 'phatka & bhidu' an orphan boy from the streets who is a car cleaner of the society and his dog....its mostly about the heights to which they go to save the dogs life but the last 10-15 minutes really became so insightful that it not only summarized the 'soul' of the movie but also struck a very strong emotional chord with everybody....the beauty of the movie is its simplicity and yet quite insightful and with a strong social message....the movie according to me s...

Memoirs In March Review (For those interested in Bangla Movies)

Those who love movies which are slow, poetic, less of acting and more of conversation will like memoirs in march...A short story of a mother (Deepti Naval) who comes to Kolkata to take back the belongings of her son but comes across a revelation about her son which she could never imagine....The treatment is very natural the whole story flows thru coversations between characters and that is what makes it an interesting watch....a critically aclaimed movie ...the movie is written and acted by 'rituporno ghosh'.....Deepti naval has been exquisite in her role as a mother....net net a very mature movie by extremely mature actors......

Golkonda High

Golkonda high is a telugu movie made very much on the lines of 'Lagaan'/'Chak De' as the basic idea of the movie revolves around the spirit of winning....however what seperates the movie from the rest is the fact that movie is made on shoe string budget, it does not have any big stars in it, the main stars are the children and the story has a very contemporary message to parents and schools who are madly behind achieving marks....the movie revolves around the story of a school which has been lagging behind in every department and therefore trustees are keen to monetise the school ground by constructing an 'IIT coaching centre'...the principal as a last ditch attempt wants the school to win the 'inter school cricket championship' and strikes a deal that if he wins the tournament then the decison for coaching centre will not be taken....in order to achieve his dream he gets his old student who was the captain of the school cricket team the last time when t...

Delhi Belly

Delhi belly is the story of the progressive, cosmo, journo kinda people living in delhi who mostly speak in english, comes from well to do family but making ends meet on their own etc....quite contrary to the typical associations we have with delhi at least from a language perspective for sure....the movie is almost 80% in english....secondly its not about politics, murder, rape, corruption etc....its a SITCOM against the backdrop of three guys living in delhi.....so in a nutshell the movie definitely takes you by surprise by the plot, execution and dialogues....Its definitely a much better product by 'Abhinay Deo' given his first attempt with game....possibly the gods (read amir khan) had a lot to do with it....the movie revolves around three guys (Imran, Vir & Kunal) living in a really shabby house somewhere in 'old delhi' and how they get caught in a series of events dealing with the search of smuggled diamonds.....the movie is a pure sitcom and sticks being that...

Shaitan Review

Shaitan is all about stylish filmaking...Looks like that the director and anurag kashyap himself wanted to make a movie which is quite inspired from tarrantino's style of filmaking....But what the movie miss out is a tight script...specially the initial 30 minutes or so doesn't impress as it looks like a story of completely rotten, gone cases of rich young kids....But its actually the 2nd half where the weak script is taken over by some real good photography, angles, cuts, and execution style where you balance ghory scenes with background scores that makes it interesting to watch....Specially the sequence of gun fight with nigerian durg peddlars and the chase scene by rajeev khandelwal were just awesome.....i have never seen in bollywood such stylish execution of scenes.....overall the style of the execution scores over many weaknesses the movie has and makes it a delightful watch....strongly recommended....

Ready....

I spent 540Rs. on 'friday' night to take my family to ready and i was not surprised to see that entire hall was full and i could hardly manage to get a ticket...such is the fan following of 'Sallu Bhai'....I saw the movie , my 3 years old child seemed to enjoy the movie as she sat thru the entire 3 hours, bachelors sitting next to me seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the cheap cheesy dialogues....so by all standards Ready seemed to be entertaining the audiences of different demographic profile and theoretically the movie should be a hit as its positioning is clear and sallu bhai definitely rocks as he is able to get audiences with his mindless, scriptless and cheap movie just bcoz all of these as been positioned under a common phenomenon called 'Paisa Wasool Entertainment'.... However having said that as a critic i felt 'Ready' will easily qualify as one of the worst movies ever made as it just made no sense....but then theory and business always do not g...

Blue Valentine

Written & Directed by Derek Cianfrance and starred by Ryan Gosling and michelle williams is a beautiful movie which potrays the typical unsaid yet very powerful emotions that we deal in our married life which leads to stress among the husband and wife and sometimes ends in a seperation.....i felt it can only be made by someone who have very closely experienced such things....but must say not a script which is unique but definitely the performances are so real and passionate that you completely relate with whats happenning between the couple...very sensitive and emotional and treated and acted brilliantly this movie is a must watch for people who like emotional movies....On the lines of revolutionary road but very different in terms of treatment....

Atul Kulkarni a powerful actor

Sometimes when you expand your horizons beyond bollywood you actually come across the creative prowess in our country which is overshadowed by the 'glamor and power' of bollywood....whether it was the marvellous detailing in the telugu movie 'arundhati' or movies like 'Antoheen' in bengali or the marathi movie 'natrang' i saw recently on my flight to 'Bangkok'.....natrang set in the 1960's and 70's when lavani/nautaki's were very popular in rural maharashtra and the journey of a person played by 'Atul Kulkarni' whose passion leads him from being a poor but handsome farmer to an artist who transforms himself to play the role of a 'eunuch' in the skits....it portrays his initial dillemma, his fight to convince the world that he is just another man who plays a eunuch to follow his passion, how he faces the social hatred and mockery which includes his family too, how he loses everything in life in search of his passion inc...

This years Oscars Line Up Is Very Good

As of now have seen three Oscar Nominations Black Swan, Kings Speech and Kids Are All Right and must say all three are so good and so different that it gives me lot of confidence that this years Oscar Winner will be a worthy movie unlike last to last year where Slumdog won it more for hype than quality....Black Swan is a gripping psycho fiction based on a ballet dancer who has been selected for the main act and how in search for perfection developes an alternate personality and starts believing in it....Not so much for the script but more for the treatment and performances...Natalie portman has been seriosly awesome and worthy of golden globe for her role in this movie...Kings Speech on the other hand is a real life story of a stammering king of england and how he overcomes his weakness....Colin Firth enacting the role of stammering king to perfection and geoffrey rush gave yet another mind blowing intelligent performance as the doctor....most interesting thing about the movie is the f...

Ye Saali Zindagi......Seriosly

What a movie is the spontaneous thought that comes to my mind....Its like 2.5 hrs of captivating journey where the action in front of you does not let you think about anything else.....That's the pace with which the movie moves on....Although based on a simple plot of two guys in love with women in their lives and subplots around it....But its not the quality of script which stands out in the movie....what captivates you is the screenplay, narration, dialogues, absolute spot on casting, great background score, excellent use of lighting and above all the editing that is just spot on....All these elements put together takes the movie to another level that probably only people like Sudhir Mishra and Vishal Bhardwaj kinda guys can do in India.....It felt like as if its a montage of photographs which has been built into a story on the editing table and i would say also in the voice over studio.....The casting was so good that acting looked just effortless....The whole execution was very...

An Interesting Start By Kiran Rao At Dhobhi Ghaa

Kiran Rao's first movie in terms of scripting and filming seems to score her connections with Kolkata and her inspiration from bengali art movies....Because Dhobhi Ghaat is so much about relationships which are unsaid, suttle and between people who have no connections. Narrative so poetic and artistic....I am sure the movie is not made for the mass and with a commercial mindset as it will appeal only to people who like this genre of movies....Its so much i would say like 'Antoheen' (if anybody has seen it).....For people looking for entertainment its a pure bore...but people seeking art its beautiful....I think she has had made a good movie and hopefully will continue to do some interesting work in years to come..... Coming to the movie....Its about these four characters who are complete strangers, have no connection at all but how during the story create connections build strange relationships with each other which cannot be expressed in words....The backdrop of this narra...

No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ)

While the trailors never intrigued me or impressed me but still i had hopes from NOKJ as it was made by a good director....But unfortunately my hopes came crashing down when i saw the movie....won't say it was a very very badly made movie but i guess i found the movie to be bland....while all Indians know the story of Jessica Lal and share the same feelings related to the tragedy...But as an audience i would like to see that event being translated into a touching and intriguing story...Somehow the movie failed to do that....It failed to bring alive the sorrow of the family, the helplessness of a family who had to wait for 10 years to seek justice, who had to face what political clout is all about.....while the crew might say they had shown all of these but according to me they failed to make me feel these emotions....Time and again i have felt that somehow Indian Filmmakers fail to touch the emotions when they make movies on emotional subjects....Be it 'Guzaarish' where San...
