Rockstar - A lost Opportunity
A mad kind of guy with loads of attitude wearing a costume that kind of helping that attitude flow thru gets into a small fight with locals in some country abroad, gets into a bus and people around him seems to looking at him with surprise on their face as they compare his looks with the looks of the singer called 'JORDAN' on the large hoardings around the town, but Jordan is lost in his own thoughts , unfazed by people's curiosity, bangs the barricade in the stadium where his show is scheduled, gets on to the stage and prepares to face the audience who are going mad for him.....That's JORDAN aka Ranbir Kapoor for you in 'Rockstar'....I must say i was completely taken aback by this powerful entry which had no dialogues, just expression..... The movie rockstar belongs to just one star i.e. Ranbir Kapoor every time he comes on screen it just lights up, the efforts he has put to get into the skin of a musician who is always lost in his own thoughts, seemingly doesn't know what is he going thru, carrying some kind of pain in his heart, doesn't know how to react to many situations he faces, music is the only remedy which gives him momentary relief.... is evident on the screen.....'Ranbir' has yet again established that he is one of the best actors in the Indian Film space today and i would say comparable to some of the best in the world.... Coming back to the movie....The movie was good...Yes 'Good' unlike to some of the other review writers (yahoo etc..) who has just bashed the movie left right and centre, i feel they were too hard on their view as a movie cannot be termed bad because of just one flaw....One has to look at it totality.....So just objectively let me rate the movie Direction was good (3 out of 5) Production Values were excellent (5 out of 5) Performances overall were above average (2.5 out 5) Editing was just awesome (5 out of 5) Background score was beautiful (5 out of 5) Album was out of the world (more than 5 out of 5) Costume Design was very good (4 out of 5) Rockstar's concept of digging into the life of an ordinary guy interested in music, his innocent way of believing in what will make him great, actually experimenting with that idea, falling in love with a girl in the process and actually realising the pain in love but still not realising what love means to him untill he loses her is very fresh and the execution of the concept onto the screen has been done extremely well as the movie keeps cutting between past, future and present....Rehman's music (background as well as album) just weaves in effortlessly to represent the agony of the rockstar and take the story ahead.....Only one place where the whole team really screwed up is on casting the 'Female lead' as the story demanded an equally able actor like Ranbir who could get into the skin of the role and infuse the same intensity that ranbir infused into his role.... Because of not only poor but possibly poorer than poor performance by 'Nargis Fakhri' the move could not quite deliver the same intensity and pain which it needed and made the audience feel the same emotions which the script wanted to generate at all stages of the story, had it been so it would have been a much different experience watching the movie... If on one hand 'Ranbir Kapoor' lifted the movie to a different level altogether on the other hand 'Nargis Fakhri' took it really down to another level and therefore the net result mathematically made the movie just about 'good' movie rather than being 'Great'.... It brings me to a very simple question that doesn't the production houses understand the science of filmmaking which depends so much on good casting...Did the team of 'Shree Ashtvianayak and Eros' forgot that while casting Nargis Fakhri...Do we still not do auditions for roles in Bollywood....I am really amazed why on earth the team of 'Rockstar' cast 'Nargis Fakhri' who is a pretty face but doesn't have any idea what acting is all about....Even the girl who played her sister in the movie acted better than her.....I would not blame her for what she did because if she is non actor you can't blame her for that but i am amazed why on earth people chose her.... This is not the first time these kind of questions crop up as it always makes us wonder whether 'casting couch' still exists...whether money that is being invested is still black or white and so on....as no serious businessman or business house would take such a risk with a role which is equally pivotal as that of the male lead..... At the end i can only say its a good watchable movie, you will love 'Ranbir kapoor', you will like the editing, direction of Imtiaz Ali, love the score by Rehman, you will love the overall concept.... I hope the movie recovers money (but may the be the producers are not bothered about it)....The movie has done good to Ranbir, Imtiaz and AR Rehman for sure....
