Udaan Review

Udaan is yet another attempt to tell the story of a young boy who is restricted by his parent to do what he wants to do and how he finally breaks free and takes that step into unknown and gives himself a chance....The highlight of the movie is the way the director brings out the small town life feel and the absence of any background score...so its a very realistic depiction and that is very impressive.....Lets talk about the lowlights i felt the movie was too documentrish and story was not well written and also well characterized....i sensed a constant conflict where the writer on one hand wanted to show that the father had a heart but he wanted his children to look at things from his perspective on the other hand it wanted to highlight that the father didn't care about his children at all .... Overall i don't think 'Udaan' will connect well with audiences even to the younger lot (at least going by the spontaneous feedback of fellow young guys in the theatre) simply bcoz somewhere it fails to evoke emotions...Ronit Roy was struggling to play a small town father...The main character 'Rohan' again also came out as a very weak actor as he could not play emotions well on his face...it looked like he is always smiling....So it ended up being boring....the only highlight i would say was the climax scene of the movie.... .....At a theoritical level movies like "3 idiots & Udaan" is a very western 'individual' way of looking at life...whereas in India life is not 'Me' its very much 'us' even today and specially in small town and lot of decisons are taken for the sake of 'family' not just for 'me'....secondly its a fallacy that parents are not cooperative....if that be the fact so many good talent in various creative field would not be coming out of small town....i would like to see a movie where we depict the life of a youth in more realistic manner rather than just branding parents as the culprit ....there are many obstacles and problems facing the youth of India....the problem is lack of awareness among parents as well as youth....lack of opportunities specially in small town....the english speaking versus local speaking divide....there could be many more ways of looking at the subject than just the angle of 'Bad Parents'........
