Gabricha Paus....

Marathi movies are making a big turnaround with some fabulous content coming out of the industry....'Gabricha Paus'(Damned Rain) is one such movie....Its a story about a farmer family in 'Vidharbha' caught in the vicious circle of 'Loan' & 'Rain'....Even in the past i have seen movies by the great 'Satyajit Ray' about the poor India (Pather Panchali) but a significant difference between that brand of cinema and this brand is the fact that somewhere 'Satyajit Ray's' brand of poor india was apologetic of that fact and that reflected in the 'Sad/Negative' tone/feel of his cinema....This is where 'Gabricha Paus' scores ....It is not a unidimensional apologetic translation of thoughts into story....Its a story about a family who knows that they are in the vicious circle and how they try to deal with it, the story has its moments of sadness but like in life it also had funny moments, romance in it...Thats where 'satish manwar'(writer/director) really scores....'Gabricha Paus' still successfully encapsulates how the vicious circle of 'Rain' & "loan' never leaves you even if you want to deal with it in various ways....I just hope that our Prime Minister (ideally agriculture minister but he is more busy in jazzy cricket affairs) watches this movie and takes some steps to deal with the situation not only in Vidharba but in other rain deficient states or regions as well....mere government schemes are not going to help unless we deal with the root cause...what is probably needed in each of these regions are government initiatives to save water throuh rain water harvesting in a big way...freeing the farmers from the clutches of money lenders by connecting them thru banks and providing them and their families additional income thru micro-finance....providing them with new tools and techniques of farming....government should directly deal with the farmers at the bottom of the pyramid till the time they become self dependent....announcing incentives for dying is not the solution at all....probably that is the message i took from the movie....A must watch for anybody who likes good content....one caution do not buy a CD as it will not have subtitles...buy a DVD with subtitles....another thought that comes to my mind is the fact that so much of good content coming out of our regions goes completely unnoticed in India bcoz there is no effort from the industry to reach out to other parts of the country and in general play a role to make the Indian audience's taste mature a bit...Bollywood has strategically prevented the Indian Audience's taste to grow over so many years...somewhat the way our political system has strategically ensured poverty to remain in the country...Its time regional cinema makes the effort...starting point releasing and promoting regional cinema in theatres outside states with subtitles....
