Review - Broken News (Zee 5)
Yet another series after "Guilty Minds" which brings good original story to the audiences. Thats what i like about "Broken News". The story moves pretty seamlessly from setting up the characters, setting the context of two rival news channels and the world of news to the main plot of Operation Umbrella (to understand this you will have to watch the series) and rivalry between the two main characters.
Among the actors the one that stands out is "Jaidip Ahlawat". He completely fits himself into the role of a shrewed, sharp, fearless, but cunning news anchor. You never feel like you are watching someone else but the character. "Shriya Pilgaonkar" has been exhibiting a lot of maturity as an actor ever since Guilty Minds. She looks & feels the character, she looks genuine and the performance seems to coming naturally from her.
Among all the character the one who disappointed me the most is "Sonali Bendre". While she genuinely tried but she struggled to carry out the Aura of the head of a news channel who is fiesty, fights for the truth and struggles to balance her values with business realities. Some of the scenes where she is exhibiting her frustrations were particularly weak. The character rather comes out as a CEO who does not know her job, lacks guts and finally hands over the crown to the best possible person. But full marks to her for the effort.
Director Vinay Waikul once again shines as a director with great control over his craft, his ability to use his cast to its best potential, a subdued storytelling that never goes overboard and ability to keep the audience hooked on to the story till the end.
Broken News is a must watch if you have not watched it yet. Its good to observe that at least OTT is bringing some meaningful original content in Hindi while BOLLYWOOD still seems to be largely busy in either remakes of South Indian movies or remake of old hits to launch star children. Or is it that all good writers and directors are happier working on OTT content?
