Paa review
I know what i am going to write most people are going hate:) Paa is a very good movies because it had great make up, very good effort by Mr.Bacchan and also credible undertoned performances by Vidya Balan and Abhisekh Bacchan. So overall it was definitely a good movie. However having said that for directors like Balki/Rakesh Mehra/Mani Ratnam etc....i think we should not compare there movies vis a vis the others in Bollywood but with the best in Hollywood....Because today there are the best India has and if we need to take our industry to greater heights then we need to have better benchmarks so that we can constantly improve.
Given this i find lot of flaws in the movie. First of all the characterisation...While i know the background that Balki had a vague idea about what he wanted to make and later on he fitted Progeria in it to provide the story more 'RTB' (typical brand langauge). But i think having decided that he should have given better thought on the chracterisation to provide the movie more 'Authenticity' and emotional appeal.
While Mr. Amitabh Bacchan is a great actor and put in a great deal of effort and coupled with the interesting PR the movie has done to market 'Auro' has drawn lot of footfalls into the theatres... But still the emotion that it needed to generate to connect deeper with the heart was always missing....During the whole movie i could never feel the mother-son relationship....There was not a single scene in the movie where Vidya Balan gets close to Auro like a mother....Auro's dialogues were like a 60yr old with Vidya, while in the movie itself it was said that in 'Progeria' the patient physically grows faster than his age but his mind is his age....Auro could never give an impression that he is a child who looks extremely old....
The story about Auro and relationship was actually shown in the 2nd half while first half was just wasted...So by the time you feel 'Okay' now the story should move on it ends...So overall the story was too short and therefore shallow....
Another thing that i wonder is not a very ethical marketing practice is the fact that the movie was promoted in schools being true the central character...But when u watch the movie apart from few sequences in the 2nd half...the movie was extremely adult...Dialogues like 'Lending your sperm doesn't mean becoming a father' and the whole sequence on Abhisekh going on media and talking about his relationship and giving a whole lecture on 'Condoms' and 'I am happy i did not use a condom'....are definitely not testimony of catering to the sense and sensibilities of Children.
I wonder about the parents and the children who went to see 'Auro' were not too amused by the content of the movie.
I really find it very unethical that in India we market a movie for the sake of marketing and take audience for granted...Here according to me the senisbilities of Kids have been compromised with by the marketing strategy of 'Paa' and its extremely unethical and dissatisying....
Having said all these i still maintain that Paa is worth a watch as a movie...But its time that talented people in this Industry start raising the Bar and work towards making movies more realistic by focussing harder on script, characterisation and screenplay rather than makeup, celebrity, PR and pre release marketing....Lets make movies that can compete on world stage...and not only rake in the mullah during the weekend....
