Review - Broken News (Zee 5)

Image
Yet another series after "Guilty Minds" which brings good original story to the audiences. Thats what i like about "Broken News". The story moves pretty seamlessly from setting up the characters, setting the context of two rival news channels and the world of news to the main plot of Operation Umbrella (to understand this you will have to watch the series) and rivalry between the two main characters. Among the actors the one that stands out is "Jaidip Ahlawat". He completely fits himself into the role of a shrewed, sharp, fearless, but cunning news anchor. You never feel like you are watching someone else but the character. "Shriya Pilgaonkar" has been exhibiting a lot of maturity as an actor ever since Guilty Minds. She looks & feels the character, she looks genuine and the performance seems to coming naturally from her. Among all the character the one who disappointed me the most is "Sonali Bendre". While she genuinely tried...

Kaun Pravin Tambey

Image
There are very few performances which makes you feel the emotions of the character. Shreyas Talpade has that ability with his genuine performances which are without any fuss and thus makes you emote along with the character. He shines in performances which deals with the struggle of a common man and somehow he always shines in the role of a cricketer whether its Iqbal or Pravin Tambey. There is a certian genuinity which makes you as an audience connect with him. Kaun Pravin Tambey is a simple story which is well written, directed and performed by every character. Jayprad Desai has done a good job as a director to not allow the film to go overboard in drama and possibly that is the essesnce which makes the film stand out and touches your heart. Ably supported by the entire cast especially Ashish Vidayrthi and Anjali Patil who adds to the core of the film i.e. Simplicity and Genuinity. Two scenes that stand out for me is the one where Shreyas states the truth to a prospective em...

Review - IPC 420 On Zee 5

Image
When Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Gul Panag & Arif Zakaria get together one can expect that even a simple predictable story will turn into a great watch. IPC 420 is somewhat like that. In spite of being a fairly predictable plot, the performances complemented with good screenplay and a real-life treatment by the director make it more than a watchable film. The film deals with the story of a middle-class chartered accountant who deals with influential government officials and businessmen and gets embroiled in a bizarre scandal that unfolds in a courtroom. The most astonishing aspect of the film is that it revolves around just 5 characters and unfolds almost entirely within a courtroom and yet it will keep you engaged and curious till the end. The character that truly stands out in the film is Ranvir Shorey who plays the role of a 'Khadoos' experienced lawyer to perfection, while Vinay Pathak, Gul Panag & Arif Zakaria keep their portrayals real and relatable as always. ...

Sardar Udham - Amazon Prime

Image
I was awaiting Sardar Udham with a lot of eagerness because of two reasons. # 1 - It was Shoojit's latest creation and we all know how good a film maker he is. # 2 - It had Vicky Kaushal who is one of the best actors in Bollywood today. The 2hr 42 min film was made with great intent to dive deep into the mind and motives of Sardar Udham Singh that led to the killing of Michael O' Dwyer 20 years after he had given the orders for Jaliwalan Bagh Executions. The highest point of the film was the last 40 minutes which showcases the Jaliwalan Bagh killings and the diplomatic defense of the incident by the army and bureaucrats of the British. It does shake you, emotionally stirs you and does make you feel angry that till date there is no official apology of the same by the United Kingdom. The film depicts some interesting characterization of Bhagat Singh and his philosophy. The role well depicted by Amol Parashar.  What I found very interesting is the way the narrative handled the d...

Review Of Korean Film 'Searching' On Netflix

Image
Searching is a 2018 Korean Film. The film is based on a simple but extremely gripping plot about a 16-year-old girl who goes missing and her father's search for her. The beauty of OTT platforms like Netflix and Prime is that they bring global content to us and that's how content-hungry people like us get exposed to this wide variety of filmmaking. What is most striking about the film is its unique treatment. The entire film and its story are weaved around the digital world. Every scene starts with a mobile or computer screen and the events unfold within the screen, even a call being made is captured as a frame.  As an audience u will get the most unique experience of film viewing, it is truly a digital film. The story is well written, it keeps the twists and turns right till the end, as an audience, there is never a dull moment in the film. It beautifully captures the essence that how we humans are getting more and disconnected from each other in the most connected world. Th...

Gully Boy - Truly Amazing....

Image
After a long time went to watch a movie on friday night...primarily because right from the word go Gully Boy intrigued me, moved me with its trailer, its music, its vibe.....and Boy it did not disappoint me at all.... What i loved about the film is its orginality, the fact that it pushed the envelope in Hindi commercial in more than one way and it definitely had some possessed actors and a great great director who keeps pushing the envelope of storytelling. The film has pushed the envelope on breaking stereotypical storytelling, this is possibly the first Hindi film which is based on musical culture grown in the slums of India, the camera movements, capturing of expressions, the overall atmosphere are so real and natural that it immediately transports you to that world..... I feel its a movie with very International style yet extremely Indian in its heart....It can compete with some of the Hollywood greats made on the life of Musicians like 'Walk The Line' or 'Ray...

'Mulk' Movie Review

When you set into making a film on a controversial subject and that too a subject like Terrorism and on top of that in Bollywood, you are playing with fire. The lure to make it Jingoistic, Overtly Dramatic is so real on one hand and on the other hand one has to be aware of how not get mired into any kind of communal controversy.  The other challenge is how do you bring in freshness into the treatment of a subject like 'Terrorism' which has been such a done to death subject. On top of all this the crew does not necessarily have credentials that would make you feel extremely confident. Specially the director Anubhav Sinha whose filmography is decent and interesting but u can't call it outstanding at the same time Tapsee Pannu is capturing eyeballs ever since she has stepped into Bollywood but she has not yet been tested really well. With this background i went to watch MULK simply because somehow the trailer intrigued me. (Yes i have a golden strike rate wit...
